From an evolutionary perspective, I find it so incredible that we are able to think about other people thinking about us.
A feeling of awe is always present when I consider the millions of years of evolution that have shaped our anatomy, our brains, our neurochemicals and mental organs and impulses that have all coalesced into one, you, and billions of people, that results in you reading this. To the ability to actually empathize with others, and connect on a basic level, and to remember not just the resources and reproduction, but joy, community, logic, and also, language.
It always surprises me, a popular question to me being an agnostic atheist is in regards to not appreciating the beauty of the universe, or having a lack of purpose. I don’t know how one, of any faith or lack of it, could not go their life and look into the universe, the star spotted night, the field of snow, the spottings of light of billions of people around the planet, and not feel so deeply connected and so deeply disconnected. It is beautiful, and causes a sheet of shivers down my skin.
Human consciousness is one of the most stunning nonphysical entities on this planet. We are so fortuitous.
